In a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the majority of the film takes place in a flashback to the 1940s and the origin of Captain America. Beginning as skinny and weak Steve Rogers, he signs up to test a super soldier formula, which turns him into The First Avenger. Fighting against the Red Skull and the Nazis on the European front, Cap sacrifices himself to protect America and her allies. In an epilogue, Steve is removed from a block of ice and thawed out almost 70 years later in a strange new world.
