Seagate Penitentiary is an island prison off the coast of Georgia in the Atlantic Ocean. It was known for allowing experiments on inmates, which gave one of them, Carl Lucas, superhuman strength and invulnerable skin.

In the first season of Iron Fist, the In-Universe address for the prison is listed as: PO Box 524, Seagate Island, GA, 31500.

LUKE CAGE SEASON 1

Interior

Luke has a brief flashback in episode 1 to a beating he received in prison. Episode 4 has the full backstory of his incarceration at this island penitentiary.

The interior (and exercise yard) for most of Seagate was filmed at the Queens House of Detention, in Kew Gardens. This has since been torn down and is now the Queens Criminal Court and Family Justice Center.

Secret Fight Club

After months of pressure from Officer Rackham, Luke decides to join his group of inmates who fight online for extra perks.

The Roosevelt Island Steam Plant, a location also used in Daredevil Season 2, was used for this sequence inside the prison. An article at Untapped Cities delves more into the history of this structure.

Dr. Burstein’s Lab

Dr Burstein attempts to repair a broken Carl Lucas in his experimental device. What he does is create a superpowered human instead.

The lab and its immediate area were designed by production designer Loren Weeks and built on a soundstage at Broadway Stages.

THE DEFENDERS SEASON 1

Following the events of season 1 of Luke Cage, the hero of Harlem is released from custody at Seagate prison having served his time, where he is met by lawyer Foggy Nelson.

The Queens Detention Complex in Kew Gardens, which was used in Daredevil Season 2 as the interiors of Ryker’s Penitentiary, served as this Georgia prison where Luke was staying, apparently, of his own accord-since he could leave whenever he wanted to. However, he was committed to serving the rest of his sentence as dictated by the Feds.
