Harlem’s Paradise Nightclub | MCU Location Scout

Entrance to Harlem's Paradise.

This place was a roach trap by the time Mama Mabel died.

Exterior

Cornell Stokes, aka Cottonmouth, makes his headquarters at this popular Harlem club, which he revitalized. As Season 1 starts, Luke Cage works here at night as a dishwasher, and sometimes as a bartender when called upon to do so. The exterior features more in episodes 11 and 12 when the NYPD responds to a shooting at the club, rescues the hostages, and arrests Luke Cage.

The exterior of Harlem’s Paradise is the Music Hall of Williamsburg, a music venue located on N 6th Street in Williamsburg. But other locations were utilized to bring this happening night spot to life.

Interior

The interior of the club includes the main performance space with a second-floor VIP balcony (used primarily by Stokes and his guests) which overlooks the stage and a bar. There’s also the kitchen space and Stokes’ private office, which features a gigantic image of Notorious BIG.

The interior of the club was designed by Loren Weeks and built on a soundstage. An article from FilmAndFurniture.com explains the reasons for building this location, rather than using the interior of an existing club space–which mainly include scheduling concerns for busy venues. When the club appears throughout the season, the VIP balcony, main floor, and Stokes’ office are the primary locales.

Alley

Episode 2 features Tone calling in a request to Turk, who meets with Shades in this back set of stairs and alley at the club.

As mentioned above, only the front entrance to the club was filmed at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. For a more realistic interior and other exterior shot a secondary location was found. This is the side/back entrance alley from the W 176th side of the United Palace Theater, a location that would also play itself later in the season. The street view, below, shows the view outside the alley entrance in the last image.

Rooftop

Episode 2 concludes with Cornell expressing his disappointment in Tone’s handling of the current situation, but throwing him from the rooftop of Harlem’s Paradise.

This rooftop also utilized the United Palace Theater and features the death of Tone on the W 176th Street side of the building.

Basement

Episode 11 takes place solely at Harlem’s Paradise, during a hostage negotiation between Diamondback and the NYPD. Claire manages to find a wounded Misty and Luke hiding in a secret room in the basement.

It’s possible that the production returned to the United Palace Theater for this epsiode as well, using other back stairways and basement levels. At this time, the exact location of these rooms is unknown.
