Clinton Church, New York | MCU: Location Scout

Matt sits on bench outside of church.

I’m not seeking penance for what I’ve done, Father. I’m asking forgiveness for what I’m about to do.

DAREDEVIL SEASON 1

Confessional (Episode 1)

Matt visits his church and speaks with Father Lantom through the confessional.

Exterior (Episodes 3 & 9)

In this episode, Matt waits out front of the church to speak with Father Lantom for a few moments.

In Episode 9, Matt once again is waiting out front, but this time agrees to come inside for a latte.

Interior Kitchen and Nave (Season 1, Episodes 9 & 11; Season 2, Episode 4; The Defenders Episode 8)

Father Lantom makes Matt a latte and speaks about having seen pure evil. Later, Matt returns to speak with the priest.

Matt visits the church and reveals that he has not taken a life as Father Lantom had feared.

DAREDEVIL SEASON 2

In Season 2, Matt, Foggy, and Karen are the only attendees for the service celebrating the life of Grotto. Matt stays to speak with Father Lantom.

THE DEFENDERS SEASON 1

In episode 8 of The Defenders, Karen and Foggy visit the church to pray for Matt, who they think was killed when Midland Circle imploded.

The Church of the Ascension on Kent Street in Brooklyn was used for the exteriors and interiors of Matt’s church in Seasons 1 & 2. Some images of the interior, with better lighting, can be seen on this Brooklyn Relics web page.

DAREDEVIL SEASON 3

Season 3 finally gives a name to Matt’s church, Clinton Church. It is revealed to be connected to the St. Agnes Orphanage, where Matt was placed after the death of his father, and where Stick would later find him. This is also the first season to use a location other than the Kent Street church, which was used for all previous appearances.

Basement/Laundry Room

Matt is given space to convalesce in the Church’s basement and laundry area by Father Lantom and Sister Maggie. This space, complete with vaulted ceilings and religious statuary, is presumed to have been filmed on a soundstage.

Rooftop and Interiors

The first new location seen in Season 3, episode 1, is the rooftop of Clinton Church. After recuperating somewhat, Matt dons a black mask again and perches on the cross atop the building to see what trouble is arising in his city. In episode 2, Matt enters the church–remembering his time as a young boy when he would listen to the prayers of the parishioners. In episode 6, Karen visits the church to speak with Sister Maggie about Matt.

Episodes 10 and 11 feature the deadly attack of Dex (dressed as Daredevil), his fight with Matt, the death of Father Lantom, and the apprehension of Karen Page by the NYPD. The number of stunts performed in the church is staggering, and quite impressive.

The Parish of Calvary–St. George’s by Gramercy Park was tapped to play the role of Matt’s Church in Season 3.

Exterior

A flashback, also in episode 2, has young Matt questioning God’s plans for him with Father Lantom, just outside the church. Episodes 11-13 spend time outside the church as the police and FBI cordon off an area in the search for the fugitive Daredevil.

This exterior was filmed at St. George’s Episcopal Church near Stuyvesant Square Park. It and the church used for interiors are both part of the same organization, which joined together in 1975 to form one church group made up of multiple locations.

Sidewalk Near Church

In episode 10, Nadeem drops Dex (in a Daredevil costume) outside the church. This was very near the exterior above. It was filmed on 2nd Avenue, one block over from Rutherford Place, on the other side of Stuyvesant Square Park.
