You wanna keep staring at the wall, or do you wanna go to work?

From the last two films of Phase 2 through Phase 3, the Avengers Compound in upstate New York has grown immensely.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Exterior and Interior

The first and main structure for the Compound is the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK.

Some additional interior shots were filmed at the Sainsbury Centre, primarily with Thor, Steve, and Tony talking and the Avengers’ assemblage in the closing shot of Age of Ultron.

The brief interiors of the compound at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron take place in the London ExCel Hall in London.

ANT-MAN

Exterior

The aerial view of the compound, first seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron earlier in the year, has been enhanced for Ant-Man. It’s now a digital composite that includes the Porsche Experience building from Atlanta in the lower right.

Field

Scott has a brief tussle with The Falcon when he attempts to break into the compound to pick up a piece of tech for Hank Pym. This was reportedly filmed in an open field near the Pinewood Atlanta Studios (presumably the one on the North side of Sandy Creek Road), according to Cinefex 143 (and fxguide), with rooftop footage filmed in the parking lot against a green screen.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Exterior

The Porsche HQ, Atlanta, served as the exterior design for an Avengers Compound building in Captain America: Civil War. The ground shot of the HQ (immediately below) was from the first Civil War trailer, and the aerial shot of the Compound digitally adds the Porsche Offices to the Sainsbury School for the Arts version as seen in previous films.

In its third outing, the upstate New York facility has undergone more renovations and changes. While buildings from Atlanta and Sainsbury have been used to represent the structures at Stark’s upstate facility (moved around from their configuration in Ant-Man), special effects background plates were shot of a spit of land, on the west side of the river, in Esopus, NY, and used by the FX team to place the buildings into. The background plate image comes from Cinefex 147.

Interior

The interiors of the Porsche Experience also served as some of the interiors of the Avengers Compound, such as Steve and Tony’s office, the meeting area, the kitchen, the rehabilitation area, and the stairway.

Exterior

In the first Spider-Man film, Peter visits Tony at the upstate New York compound and is offered a place on the Avengers. Yet another new configuration of the buildings is created for this film, but the main building is still played by the Porsche Experience in Atlanta.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Exterior

The campus of the Avengers Compound continues to morph and grow as the films are released. Buildings from the Porsche Experience and the Sainsbury Centre are still incorporated, along with many other generic, nondescript buildings. Avengers: Infinity War also moved the location from the west side of the Hudson River in Esopus to the east side, and a bit north, in Staatsburg, NY, using Mills Mansion and the Staatsburgh State Historic Site grounds.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME

Exterior

For each appearance, the Avengers Compound continues to morph, adding new buildings to its campus. The exterior location is still in Staatsburg, NY, but now it contains the newest addition, the SANY Building. This is a company that sells construction equipment in Peachtree City, GA.

This new exterior of the Avengers Compound was used for all the scenes outside the building, including the return of Tony Stark from space, Scott Lang enjoying a taco, and Tony returning the shield to Steve.

Additionally, according to the Avengers: Endgame commentary, “before the Avengers Compound is destroyed by Thanos at the end of the movie, [Christopher] Markus points out that the sequences in the building were actually shot in an abandoned hotel in Atlanta.” This converted soundstage is located off Sullivan Rd in College Park, GA, near the airport.
