Vintage Newsreel (1947) | MCU: Location Scout

Vintage newsreel of Santa Monica Beach.

Miss Carter, you have no idea how foreign Los Angeles will seem to a civilized person such as yourself.

An intro of sorts after the Agent Carter title card shows some vintage footage of famous landmarks in Hollywood and Southern California.

Broadway Hollywood Building

A wide shot shows a number of buildings in downtown Hollywood, including The Broadway Hollywood. This building was originally a department store built in 1927, and is now a historic building on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. The shot also shows the Hollywoodland sign on Mount Lee in the background. This is an accurate depiction of the sign in 1947. Two years later, the “land” would be removed.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater

This shot looks east along Hollywood Blvd with Grauman’s Chinese Theater (later Mann’s and now TCL’s) on the left, with parts of the Hollywood Hotel on the right. This theater, an early example of a movie palace, was originally opened in 1927 after the success of Grauman’s Egyptian Theater nearby.

Hollywood Hotel

This famous hotel was a staple of downtown Hollywood from 1902 through 1956, when it was demolished for an office building. It was originally situated at 6811 Hollywood Boulevard, from Highland Avenue to Orchid Avenue.

Beverly Hills Brown Derby

The shot depicts the third of the Brown Derby restaurants that sprang up in the middle of the 20th Century in Los Angeles. This is the restaurant located in Beverly Hills at 9537 Wilshire Blvd. Many people may be more familiar with the Los Angeles location at 3427 Wilshire, which is shaped like a brown derby hat.

Santa Monica Beach

Beaches have been a popular resort in Southern California as long as people have been visiting the Southland. The header image above has the Santa Monica pier located across the top of the image, as the camera looks south along the beach. The bottom-most building below is still located at 415 Pacific Coast Highway and is the Annenberg Community Beach House.
