Wakanda | MCU: Location Scout

Aerial image of fog enshrouded mountains. Text: Wakanda.

Five tribes settled on this meteorite made of vibranium and called it Wakanda.

Based on the information from The Art of Black Panther, Wakanda is situated between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (approximately, as Lake Kivu doesn’t actually border on Uganda).

Many other photographic reference shots for digital backgrounds, or actual plate photography took place in Africa to create the looks of Wakanda. Some of these locations include: farmlands of Uganda and various areas of South Africa.

Similar shots of African landscapes were used as background plates for the fictional country of Wakanda in the sequel film. No exact correlations between real-world locations have been made just yet.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Prior to Black Panther getting released, Wakanda had been teased in both the final scene in Iron Man 2 (on a map behind Tony and Nick), as well as featured as a key plot point in Captain America: Civil War.

Approximate location of the African nation of Wakanda per the Maps on MSNBC. Home to the only known source of vibranium. The backgrounds of the jungle shot, from the final scene (above), were captured in Brazil according to Cinefex 147.
